Funnel Cake, French Fries, and The Washington, DC Health and Fitness Expo

January 17, 2011

In fact, there were some enticing looking Indian and Jamaican dishes at the NBC’s Health and Fitness Expo in Washington, DC over the weekend.  How they were prepared, I do not know, but potentially quite healthy.   Also present was a vendor selling funnel cakes, chicken fingers, and French fries.  Wait, what??

Surely nobody would choose to eat such fried, fatty, and processed food at a health and fitness expo…right?  I was slightly offended that such a vendor would be allowed at this venue, and shocked that people – many people – sat around eating funnel cake.

And across the aisle from a breast cancer awareness booth…was a McDonalds stand?  Even if McDonalds has added “healthier” options, is it really ethical to display the golden arches at an event meant to promote health?

I often remind my patients that it is very easy to make a poor choice when it comes to feeding yourself in America.  The healthiest food is not only more expensive, but it is less visible. How often do our presented options include kale, squash, fresh ginger, sprouts, or organic grass-fed beef?  Many Americans don’t even know what bok choy, collard greens, or miso looks like, tastes like, or where these items can be located in a grocery store.

I was disheartened to see that an event with seemingly healthful intentions missed the boat from a nutritional standpoint.  The highlight of my day was meeting Ada Wong from NBC’s The Biggest Loser.  She looked happy, fit, and well.  I wonder what she ate for lunch?

You are what you eat.

In good health,
